In the state of Texas, 1970 was the first year when a reliable reporting about the number of divorces was made to the Vital Statistics Unit. For this year, 51,530 divorces were reported. The number of divorces increased continuously till 1981, when 101,856 number of divorces were reported. From 1982 till date, the number of divorces per year has been lesser than the 1981 number. In 2004, 81,324 divorces were granted. This number decreased by 6.6 percent to 75,980 divorces in 2005.

In case of women, 50.1 percent divorces took place in the age group of 25 to 39.
